Organized annually by The Ethiopian American – a U.S. based Ethiopian Diaspora business and investment group – the Forum and the Awards Luncheon held at the George Washington University, attracted hundreds of Ethiopian Diasporas from Ethiopia and America as well as non-Ethiopians interested in business and investment in Ethiopia, according to the stamen given by the organsiers.

Jointly sponsored by the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, the Ethiopian Airlines and The George Washington University Business School the Forum discussed on agri-business opportunities in Ethiopia as it is planned.

Speakers at the Forum included Daniel Gad, owner and Managing Director of Omega Farms PLC, Yohannes Tilahun, Senior Director for Public Private Partnerships and Special Projects at the Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation Agency (ATA), Paul Guenette, Senior Vice President for Corporate Affairs for ACDI/VOCA, Greg Ziegler, Professor of Food Science at Penn State University, Ron Kopicki, Private Sector Development Advisor for the World Bank (WB) and Bruk Haile, Vice President for Business Development at COMEX Services PLC, among others.

Daniel Gad, a Diaspora himself, left his executive job at AT&T, a leading telecom company in America and founded Omega Farms in Ethiopia. His company runs a leading vegetable production farm in Ethiopia and is engaged in the production and export sales of pre-packed exotic high value vegetables to the EU and UK markets.

The ATA, on the other hand, is a results-driven organization that reports to an Agricultural Transformation Council chaired by Hailemariam Dessalegn, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia and is tasked with catalyzing and supporting all key stakeholders to transform the country’s agricultural sector such that Ethiopia achieves its national target of reaching middle-income status by 2025.

“The successful conclusion of this year’s edition of the Forum and the Award Luncheon is yet another milestone in the growth of the Forum,” said Yohannes Assefa, Managing Director of the Virginia-based The Ethiopian American LLC. “As we successfully conclude the 8th edition, we are embarking on major preparations for the 10th Anniversary of the Forum coming in 2015, which will see a new level of engagement by the Ethiopian Diaspora.”

The Ethiopian Diaspora Business Forum is organized by the Ethiopian American, a Virginia based Ethiopian Diaspora business and investment group with offices in New York. The Ethiopian American was first established as non-partisan, professional business publication in 2004 by a group of young Diaspora professionals to create a positive and non-political platform devoted to the issue of business and investment in the Ethiopian Diaspora community.

Over the years, the Forum served as a key platform for Diaspora discussions on many important issues such as trade and investment in Ethiopia and the United States, the AGOA, business environment and related regulatory affairs.

Seven years later, the Forum has grown and continues to growT strong in every aspect by empowering the Diaspora business community with valuable information and enabling the community to participate in Ethiopia’s economy and development in a meaningful way.
